Hello again, everybody!

These past few editions have met with some great responses, and I am quite happy with the feedback I have received so far. That said, some people may not be quite aware of who I am, what I do, or why I am uniquely qualified to help people tackle the challenges that come alongside living or investing overseas. So, for those of you who don’t already know me, allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Mikkel Thorup, and I have lived outside of my home country of Canada since my late teens. I have lived in 9 countries, have had 3 children in 3 different countries with my wife, and founded Expat Money nearly a decade ago so I could help people build better lives abroad.

The structures are up, and the labour team is installing the siding quite literally as you are reading this! Come June or July, you will hardly be able to recognize what is still currently an active construction site.

Brazil's National Drink - The Caipirinha

A symbol of Brazilian culture, the Caipirinha is Brazil's national drink. It’s made with cachaca (a distilled spirit derived from sugarcane), lime, sugar, and ice. The Caipirinha remains the most well-known and most heavily indulged drink for Brazilians and visitors alike. I can personally attest to the magic of this drink. During a six-month period in Brazil…. I will neither confirm nor deny that I may have had at least one of these a day. They are simple, delicious, and extremely refreshing. A Sport Like No Other: Footvolley

Footvolley is a sport that blends the skills of football (soccer) and volleyball and is typically played on a beach volleyball court. Played in doubles teams, players aim to score points by hitting the ball over the net without using their hands or arms… every other part of the body is fair game. Similar to volleyball, points are earned when the opposing team fails to return the ball over the net. 

Footvolley requires precise control and coordination as players strategically maneuver to outplay their opponents. Whether enjoyed casually on the beach or in organized tournaments, Footvolley is MASSIVE in Brazil. If you go to any beach in Brazil at any time, you will see hundreds of people playing!

What to Expect When You Buy Pre-Construction in Brazil

I have worked with a number of clients who have purchased homes from my partners in Brazil before, so I figured for those of you who will be purchasing one in the future that, it would be helpful for me to explain a few things. Typically, if you’re buying a pre-construction unit with us, the delivery time is going to be between 18-24 months. However, you may notice that in the first few months, it seems as if not much is happening in regard to the development of the physical structure that you have paid to have built. In fact, this is totally normal and should be expected. 

When a new development is being launched, the construction of the homes themselves is most often the easiest and quickest part. This is by no means saying that building beachfront homes is easy or that the builds are lacking in quality; I say this more to emphasize the difficulties and challenges that come along with creating a community on a virgin plot of land that does not have the necessary infrastructure.

Roadways, hydro, water, gas, sewage systems, communication infrastructure, land grading/excavation, and stormwater management are just a few of the things that are completed well before the homes themselves are constructed. 

I thought it was important to mention this because, in the past, clients have written to me to ask why it seems like nothing is happening, and I have to re-explain this to them. So, for those of you who will make the decision to purchase a property from the team at Brazil Beachfront, I hope this gives you a bit of a clearer picture as to what really goes into creating a residential development on the beach and helps you to rest easy knowing your investment is in very capable and proven hands.
